Moshiach Who Atones

Who has heard of Moshiach who atones for us? This seems like a stretch, but even texts such as the Zohar recognize the message of passages in Tanach such as Yeshayohu נג.

Here’s one passage from the Zohar:

“In the hour in which they tell Moshiach about the sufferings of Yisroel in the golus, and the sinful among them who seek not the knowledge of their Master, Moshiach lifts up his voice and weeps over those sinful among them. This is what is written, “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.” (Yeshayohu perek נג, posek ה)”.
Zohar

And in Midrash Konen we find:

“…Ánd in it is Moshiach ben Dovid who loves Yerushalayim. Eliyohu of blessed memory takes hold of his head, places it in his lap and holds it, and says to him: “Endure the sufferings and the sentence your Master who makes you suffer because of the sin of Yisroel.” And thus it is written, “He was wounded because of our transgressions, he was crushed because of our iniquities” (Yeshayohu נג, ה) until the time the end comes.”
Midrash Konen from Beis HaMidrash

Rabbi Moshe Alshech even says, “…then it shall be accounted as if Yisroel had pierced him (Moshiach ben Yosef), for on account of their sin he has died…”.
Commentary on Zecharyoh perek יב, posek י.

Let us look at the passage referred to in the first two quotes.

It is clear that these psukim speak of one onto whom HaKadosh Baruch Hu will transfer the sin of Yisroel. He will be cut off out from the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due.

This is an amazing promise. A time will come when our sin will be transferred onto Moshiach and he will be cut off from the land of the living for the transgression of the people of HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

Each Rosh HaShonah our people wish each other to be inscribed in Sefer HaChaim. Yeshayohu gives us the clearest psukim explaining how HaKadosh Baruch Hu provides this for us and how we can know we are written in the Sefer HaChaim. He shows us how we can be with Ribbono Shel Olam forever in the Oilom Haboh. HaNovi Daniel reminds us in perek יב, posek ב that we face a definite future in the Oilom Haboh – with HaKadosh Baruch Hu, or without HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

To know we are written in the Sefer HaChaim, the Torah requires כפור. In Yeshayohu and other psukim in the Tenach Ribbono Shel Olam explains how we can have this for sure.
